MEMORIES OF WOOMERA - 31

Memories

WOW!!  I am just simply blown away at how just reading other people's entries has stirred up such wonderful memories. My name is Chris Williams (Flores). I was stationed at Woomera from 1980 to 1982 with the US Air Force JDSCS. Woomera
has always held a very special place in my heart since.

I married my husband Lee there on Oct. 1, 1982 at the Protestant Church and we had our reception at the Golf Club.  Lee was not stationed at Woomera, but he flew half way around the world to marry me.  He also became enchanted with the people and the village of Woomera.  I remember the Eldo, Spuds (the garlic prawns were to die for), playing bingo, parties that lasted all night, the awesome star-filled skies, watching the Americans play Aussie basketball, the bus rides to shop at Port Augusta and Whyalla and chowing down on Kentucky Fried Chicken and Pizza Hut, playing baseball for Koolymilka, going to Adelaide and staying at a bed and breakfast (being awakened by a woman going down the hall banging pots and pans and yelling for us to wake up for breakfast), eating pancakes at Gerties in Adelaide.  I could go on and on...

I had several Aussie mates. I fondly remember Steve "Chingy" Zehender, Bob Spooner, Danny (the butcher) & Meg Jordan (I got my dachshund puppy "Mate" from Danny) my co-workers in the warehouse: Gwyn "Tommy" Rich,  David, Andy, CC
Vincent, Bernie Swan (and his wife Karyn) Shirley Jayne. I remember Louise and Colin (can't remember their last name) went to their wedding and would party with them and Louise's sister Diane and their mum and dad.  My American friends were Dennis and Karen Kosinski, Bob and Naomi Diehl, Janie Lockhart, Oscar Rodriguez, Sue Pennell, and countless others.

I have always dreamed of returning to Woomera.   I was not too happy to hear about the immigration detention centre that is there now and the troubles that they have had with it.  I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me.

Mark, thanks for the memories and keep up the good work.

Sincerely,
Chris (Flores) Williams
