I have lived in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia for over fifteen years now, I emigrated from New Zealand with my husband and two children. I love Australia and I am going to share some of the reasons why in this page.

Australia has a population of 18,508,000 (roughly 0.3% of the worlds population), 94% European, 4.5% Asian and 1.5% Aboriginal. The term "The Land Down Under" most probably originated because Australia lies in the Southern Hemisphere. Australia is the only country in the world that occupies a whole continent. Australia is sparsely populated, with the bulk of population concentrated along the east, southeast and southwest coasts.

The total area of Australia is 7,682,292 square kilometers (2,966,133 square miles). 3,200 kilometers north to south and 4,000 kilometers east to west. Australia is the worlds sixth largest country, just a bit smaller than the U.S.A.

ABORIGINAL DANCERS - WATTLE (NATIVE FLOWER)

Lieutenant James Cook (to be promoted to Captain) landed on the Australian shore at Botany Bay on April 28, 1770. The First Fleet in 1787, Britain's prisons were overcrowded so 732 convicts along with 641 civilians were shipped to Port Jackson, New South Wales which was later to become known as Sydney. This landing took place on January 26, 1788 and each year on this day, (Australia Day), it is declared a holiday to commemorate the landing of the first settlers. It is believed that Aboriginal people migrated to Australia from South-East Asia between 50,000 and 60,000 years ago. Aborigines traditionally were hunters, moving from area to area with seasons. Aborigines are very expressive in their songs, art and dance. Estimation of Aborigine population in 1788 was between 250,000 and 750,000. The new settlers to Australia ruthlessly pushed the Aborigines off the tribal land, in bid to set up land for farming and mining. A huge influx of migrants to Australia arrived in the 1850's when Gold was discovered.

States and territory captials are:- New South Wales - Sydney, Victoria - Melbourne, South Australia - Adelaide, Western Australia - Perth, Tasmania - Hobart, Northern Territory - Darwin, Australian Capital Territory - Canberra and Queensland - Brisbane (which is were I live). Queensland is almost one-quarter of the continent, four times the size of California in U.S.A.
