INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS AND TIPS

Positioning the Sensor and Sendor

Aim: To position the sender and sensor to ensure the body of the sheep (or lamb) cuts the invisible beam.

  • Select a suitable position on the outside of the chute near the entrance from the shearing platform but far enough down the chute where a sheep cannot return to the platform. Bear in mind the length of cable available. We suggest a height of 300 mm. (1 foot) above the floor of the chute but this should be chosen to suit your particular set-up.

  • For a chute wall thickness 20mm or more bore a hole 1/2" (12.mm) diameter in one chute wall for the sender (the small black cylinder on the end of the small cable from the sensor box). Hold the drill perpendicular to the wall.

  • If the chute walls are thinner than 20mm make up a block of wood at least 20mm thick, bore a 1/2" hole at it's centre. Bore a hole 1/2" diameter in the chute wall and fix the block to the wall with the two holes aligned.

  • Don't fix the sender in position at this stage as you will need access to the hole to locate the position of the sensor box.

  • Place an electric torch firmly against the outside of the chute wall over the sender hole with its globe aligned with the hole. (It may be necessary to move the torch slightly to get a bright spot on the opposite wall).

  • Mark the centre of the torch beam shining on the opposite chute wall. This is the position for the centre of the hole for the sensor box.

  • Cut a hole 1-3\8" (35mm) minimum diameter in the chute wall at the selected position.

TECHNICAL HOTLINE

If you experience difficulties with the installation or operation of STOCKOUNT please phone Practronics on 0419 919 968 between 8 am and 8 pm (WAST).

SETTING UP THE SYSTEM

  • Fix the sensor on the outside of the wall over the 1-3/8" hole so that the two "eyes" on the face of the sensor have maximum clearance from the edge of the hole and cable entry to the sender faces downwards.

  • Pass the sender and it's cable under the chute to the opposite side. The cable should be protected against damage e.g. from chewing by sheep, by placing a sheath around it. A length of 13mm or greater poly-pipe would be suitable.

  • Push the sender into the 1/2" hole in the chute wall. Make sure that it cannot be moved either by fixing it with, e.g. silicone sealer, or wedging it with tape etc..Be careful not to permit contamination of the glass end of the sender.

  • Connect the sensor cable to the display cable with the joiner provided.

  • Securely fasten and protect cabling particularly in areas where damage from stock is possible.

  • Install the display unit in a convenient location visible to the user and within the lengths of cable supplied (power-converter and sensor).

TESTING THE SYSTEM

  • Set the delay switch to 1 sec. Press the red reset button on the display unit to zero the count.

  • Confirm operation of the system by moving a piece of card through the beam. As you do this the red light on the sensor should light briefly as the card passes through the beam. The sounder in the display should beep and the count be advanced by one. Note that repeated interruption of the beam will not cause a count unless one second has elapsed after the beam has been cleared.

STOCKOUNT is now ready for operation
