Mark's Music Diary

A musician friend of mine who has been playing for many years (Michel, 20+?) remarked one day that he wished he'd kept a diary of all the gigs he'd done. So I decided to create one of my own that I can sit on the lazy chair when I'm retired and get all misty eyed... (cue dream sequence music, swirly cloudy picture FX ! )
Might not be overly interesting to others but thought I'd stick it here anyhow. Hopefully it will get bigger soon....

............................................

~1996-7, Pine Rivers Guitar Band - large collection of guitar students, played once at the local high school - just a distant memory....I seem to remember torturing a few Beatles songs. (not much changed there!)

"The Pod" Folky gathering that used to run blackboard nights at The Paddo Workers Club. This was the 1st place I played solo... ("Brown Alert!")

"Rock n Roll Repairs" piss up nights, too many to remember. Bring yer ear plugs. (I did!)

"Wax Lyrical" open mic night at The Brunswick Hotel - 1st one I did 9/01... sweaty palms! Did at least 20 - 30 of these more, a great way to learn to play.

"Imbil Music Weekend" - Went to my 1st one of these in 1998, never missed it since. A great weekend.

" Moray Street Cafe", New Farm. Almost never miss a Sunday night - Absolute BEST place I ever found, Flamenco mostly, also Gypsie Jazz, Classical...and me ; ) Mainly guitarists but also seen violin, percussion, vocals, dancers and one crazy guy (George!) turns up now and then with a foot pumped antique reed organ!
Sadly the moray nights are no more... but we moved just meters away at "Sassy's"!! (This has shut down now)

"Cinema Cafe" Bulimba - used to have a Monday night Jazz band / Jam/ guests... killed by threats made by buisness neighboughs, sadly missed. Was a wonderful music scene. (The cafe is still there - AWESOME coffee! ..which is served in these weird metal insulated type cups that trick you into thinking it's cooling and then you burn your tongue...... ;)

"BASEQ Jams" - have only made it to a few and not for a long while. Must get there again.

"Woodford Folk Festival 2001" - Grabbed a couple of spots at Spag. Junction and Bamboo Palace. (had flu but went ok)

"Woodford 2002" - Couldn't get into the blackboards but got lots of nice complements from the campsite!

"The Seabrae Hotel Redcliffe" -Many many Friday nights solo and jams with a couple of guys, ( John & Jim) playing for the public bar crowd.

"2003 Boonah Music Weekend" - playing lead guitar for "Memphis Joe Band" (a video of the day exists!) - Really good PA System & staff, crappy sounding sports hall.

3/03 "Kangaroo Point Marchfest Blues, Jazz & Gospel 2003" - With"Memphis Joe"again. Another place with bad room acoustics. Well organised.

8/3/03 "The Winery" West End - Got a half hour set with a free recording of it on CD! Landmark event! My performing confidence (and life) really turned a corner here. Met some nice people. Still miss u.
Listen to these song samples from that night.Summertime and No Fury

6/7/03 "Aussie Music Club" Newstead, 1st one at Danish Club. Did solo for about an hour. Good venue, clean & non-smoking.

20/7/03 "4MBS Performance Studio" at a Barry Roberts Music appreciation class. Sold some CDs too. Thanks Barry.

10/03 Party - froggys place, Jeremie goes to France!

IMBIL 11/ 2003 - real good! Lots of jammin.... very late nights/early mornings. Met some new people.

11/03 Party - Graeme (Flamenco fan) has a Irish/Flamenco & Me. get-together...fun.

9/11/03Wax Lyrical/TAFE at BEMAC under Story Bridge- quick set went down well, played nylon string (lance), sold a CD - YAY!

"Grow" house for helping people get their lives back together. Mt. Gravatt. Jam/solo, At a couple of their fund raisers, got asked to do a birthday gig in the following May.

Aussie nash Jam night - last for 2003, with blokes I just met forming new blues band. (loud but good fun)

Sonfest 2004 Boonah, Lead guitar for "Memphis Joe Band." (nicknamed festival "Mudfest 2004") small (wet) stage would have been ok in dry weather. Long way to travel for 1/2 hr gig.

1/5/04"Grow" 46th Birthday Celebrations,

24/6/04 Hosted "BASEQ" Blues Jam with the band

7/04? Last ever Wax Lyrical, one long jam night.... end of an era. Thanks Jules.

1/8/04 Hosted" "Backyard Blues Jam", Redbank Hotel, With the Band

14/8/04 Mansfield Tavern, Public Bar, 8pm-12. 1st ever agent gig! Averaged about 12 people, closed 11pm. (was fun, PA worked well)

21/8/04 Mansfield Tavern Public Bar, 8pm-12. 2nd agent gig! Double booked, whoops. I still got do gig. slightly better crowd. Met interesting bloke (Trevor?)

3/9/04 Kenmore," Private, 21st Party. (Robbie McK.) Good crowd. Lotsa fun. Also was an awesome Jazz band. 2x horns,guit.bass&drums.

4/9/04Mansfield Tavern, noisy footy crowd 1/2 the night. ("play Metalica!") Weekend Wariors were on in big room... some spilled over to public bar after they ended, playing to half a dozen guitar players etc. Good responses from most. Closed bit after 12a

9/04 Played again at The "Backyard Blues Jam", Redbank Hotel, with various jammers. Was a good day.

11/9/04 Mansfield Tavern, 7 friends turned up and made the night worthwhile. Empty by 10:30, played to staff! Closed 11:30p

9/04 Highway Hotel thurs night blues jam. Bugger all crowd but those few that came were a good bunch. Not many jammers so I got to hog the stage a bit! (yay!)

20/9/04 "Blue Monday" Blues session at "Satchmo's" cafe in West end. Hosted by "Mark D's big Three" - Great little venue, not too loud, good coffee, food etc. Not smoky. Definitely will be going back.

2/10/04 Mansfield Tav. Very quiet night to start with. Later some party goers. Big reaction to my Hubcap guitar. Got a request for "Rev. Gary Davis" ! Also happened to have the 12 str. with me and it worked well, even with the pick up.

2/10/04 Redbank Hotel Jam, usual suspects and a couple of new ones. Very Smoky. Air con was cranked.

7/10/04 - "Mad Ass Folk Club" - Finally made it after a year or more... Great crowd - music lovers of many flavours. They'll be seeing me again. ...and the cake was good too. ;)

"Sunday Arvo Solo Gig" Svorboda park, Kuraby...17th Oct.04 ....Music in the park. was fun. didn't rain all day. ....

17/10/04 "Sassy's" - cafe on Merthyr Road New Farm. 2nd Flamenco night since being rudely kicked out of the place up the road. Went well, Dos Flamencos (Ken & Bob), Shakti and me. Plus some quasi-Portugese "Flamenco" singing from one of the patrons. Good crowd reactions. Very friendly owners/staff. - UPDATE 2/05 : Unfortunatley the cafe has shut down, no doubt we'll start up again some place....

18/10/04 "Blue Monday" Blues session at "Satchmo's" cafe in West end (185 Boundary Street West End 4101 Tel: (07) 3846 7746). Played a few Tom Waits songs with Ken & Rob. Was a big night, lotsa interestin jammers.

13/11/04 -"B.A.S.E.Q." 9th Birthday Bash - Did a solo spot between bands, perched in front of the stage with the dancers! (7 songs). Lotsa people, great blues crowd.

21/11/04 - "8th Annual Dandenong Ranges Monbulk Jazz 'n' Blues Festival (Melbourne)" - Flew down on "Virgin Blue", cheap fare, my guitar survived, all went smoothly. Got the last spot of the venue (local RSL), had a great gig (just over 1.5 hrs), lots of rellies/renta-crowd. (30 - 40 people all up) Sold 5 copies of my new CD!! Definitley would like to go back next year if I can get a spot on the Saturday...

11/12/04 "Backyard Blooz Xmas Party - Commercial Hotel, Redbank" On the bill supporting the "Funken Blues Band". Set up two "stages" at either end of the room and kept a constant source of live music happening all night... Many thanks to Nicko, Maz etc etc for a seriously good time!

17/12/04 Seabrae Hotel, took my PA for spin at the John And Jim show....
18/12/04 Mansfield Tavern, just a bit low on "crowd"... but I SOLD a CD! (considering there was only ONE bloke to sell it to at that stage twas a good effort! :)

16/1/05 Aussie Nash Hotel, "Saxy Lou's Birthday Bash" - played about a half hour with the band and birthday girl on Sax/Keys. Had a ball.

20/1/05 "Madass Acoustic Music Club" - Hotel Broadway, Wooloongabba - Opened the singer/songwriter night. Was a mixed bag, I had fun and despite being half asleep the adrenalin kicked in... Many thanks to the Madassers.

23/2/05 "Lucid Restaurant & Juice Bar, 155 Baroona Road, Rosalie" REMAX charity event. Did a couple of hours with the band in a softer, stripped down mode. Was great, we we probably work on getting a smoother jazz type feel to play these sort of places.

26/2/05 "Mansfield Tavern" slow start 1st hour, but filled up well later - biggest crowd yet. Large mix of people. I had a lot of fun! (tested my new FX unit with a "super-sub" setting - works REAL well)

10/3/05 Kedron Park Hotel - "Jammin for Jugs" (beer type jugs! ;) Droppped in to the open mic night at John Bisquits suggestion. Not a bad place, love the old "Galaga" and "Pac Man" machines. Played a few songs, will come back for more....
18/3/05 "Mansfield Tavern" - Started off competing with the TV (Rugby), but became a great night with largest crowd to date. Thanks to the four BASEQ blues-a-holics for turning up! Some young blokes yelled out "Hotel California" so I played it and let them sing (sort of) a bit......what fun!

Band Gig: 23/3/05 Asked back to another Remax charity wine & cheese function at "Lucid Restaurant & Juice Bar, 155 Baroona Road, Rosalie". 7/7/05 Jubilee Hotel, (band - with guest Bassman Tom) Took over the jam night for the Blue Rythm Kings. Bad flu caused no singing for me but Lil' Son Gregory took over those duties with a distinct country blues flavour! Thanks to the jammers who braved the (mild) Brisbane winter and many thanks to Jules V. etc, they will be back next week....

9/7/05 Managed to get through a short wedding gig (our first one of those). All went well, even had them dancing early in the night.

14/7/05 Back to the Jubilee to step in for the Blue Rythm Kings again, with Rob on bass this time, Lil' Son Gregory turned up again too. Nearly stuffed my voice in the first set but had a rest and some aweful cough mixture which fixed it up.

22/7/05 Capalaba Tavern, Oh no they still have stairs! Not too many though, we had fun once set up.....

5/8/05 Late notice gig at the Capalaba Tavern. Good bloke Tom stepped in on bass for Rob who couldn't make it and a bloody good job he did too! Even had him singing a bit when my voice started to croak. Man this flu/cheasty thing is hanging around a long time...

18/9/05 Short (!) solo at the Julbillee Hotel, BASEQ send off for Cyril Campbell, sadly passed away and much loved as the turn out showed. Not my best performance, broke two strings and only got foldback partly sorted for the last song...... oh well. Found out later some blokes were asking if I was available to form a band so I can't have been too bad.....
