Shirleyphiles ... its been a long time between drinks I know and yours truly is still kicking up her cha cha heels here in detox ... busily scrabbling together the next project for your online aural pleasure ... "Postcards from Detox" - that is when I'm not pre-occupied with my macrame, swapping tall tales and true with the other inmates and showing the cell wardens the finer points of how to do "The Gypsy Tap" and a mean Samba with some finesse. These boys have two left feet on each hand let me tell you! Thank you all for your "care" packages and well wishes ... and swampfox darl ... I'm putting that tube of Fire Engine Red lippy you sent me to excellent use. *mwah*

I just couldn't let a very special occasion pass ... so I've smuggled a few instructions out to my faithful manservant, mr. Kenneth to pull down a few tunes from the shelf and inflict you all with just a little of radioShirley's web presence again. Its not the half hour extravaganza that you became so accustomed to, nor is it infused with the cut and paste schizoid madness that was present during the last series ... this is a one-off - well, if Shirley Bassey dies within the next week or some other equally tragic event befalls us ... I'll certainly be back - but just a few super ... yes I really did say that ... super tracks from laShirl's mainman, David Bowie. Why?

Well, those of you low-fi luvverlies out there who know me, certainly are aware of my devotion to David Bowie - "I'm just a space cadet - he's the Commander" - and this week marks the release of his very first single AS David Bowie with The Lower Third ... 39 years ago!

He changed his real name, David Robert Jones for a moniker that hinted to a future vision of someone/thing - the Bowie knife - being on the cutting edge - an object which can cut "it" both ways. Enough has already been said about David's cutting it both ways exploits so I'll refrain from getting into that deliciously sordid territory.

Lawdy clawdy ... 39 years ago ... where were you? I was just a little nailbiter back then with glitter in her eyes and a penchant for staring into saucepans while Miss Pat on televison's kiddie sitter "Romper Room", teased us all with
"and I can see you ... so and so" ... Miss Pat was such a tease ... and I'm not just talking about her hair-do!

For you trainspotters out there, the single in question, "Can't Help Thinking About Me" backed by "And I Say To Myself" reached number 34 in the Melody Maker chart and peaked at number 14 on 20 February 1966 in the Radio London Fabulous Forty chart. They had a chart back then called the "Fabulous Forty"?? Where have all the good times gone! The musicians on the single were David Bowie: vocals/tambourine, Dennis Taylor: guitar, Graham Rivens:bass and Phil Lancaster:drums. The producer was none other than Tony Hatch. Oh how I loved those Jackie and Tony Hatch duets ... and a smashing job Tony H. did producing for another of my faves, Petula Clark. Tony just couldn't turn David into another Petula and they only recorded a few more tracks together I believe before parting company. The rest you can read in the tabloids.

A very sharp bunch of lads "The Lower Third" were weren't they? I'd love to know what the two boys on the left below are saying to one another. I'd bet my sweet bippy that it has something to do with a certain sartorial crime that's been committed. The choice of tie perhaps? Or maybe even the fact that "the tall one" is wearing a brand new shirt which clearly has not been ironed before the photo shoot. The creases are as obvious as David's disinterest in the whole proceedings!
So here for your listening pleasure low-fi luvverlies is the said A-Side/B-Side and a live version of "Can't Help Thinking About Me " that Bowie performed in Vienna in 1999. This song was performed a number of times during that tour as a teaser to the yet to be released, and probably never to see the light of day except amongst "the inner circle" - you know who you are - you can run but you can't hide - "Toy" album. A collection of re-recordings of his 1960's tracks that Bowie felt that still had some merit. Heaven knows he's consistently trashed this era of his back catalogue but yours truly considers it packed full of shiny shiny gems ...

For the moment, it's farewell again from me, farewell again from her and farewell again from him ... so all you Modettes, time to go-go get Mary Quanted up to the eyeballs, throw back the scatter cushions, move the cat out of harms way as you prepare to shimmy like a Biba bunny to celebrate the birth of the recording legend ... in a name that is ... Bowie - David Bowie - all in glorious low-fi!

Until next time, take care and play fair.
