Mittens and scarves.
The key here is two "magic" numbers. The thumb is one third of the stitches of the mitten. Cast on a multiple of four stitches on each DP needle. For adult needles use a multiple of four minus 2 because you will increase 2 stitches on each needle after the ribbed cuff, but a babies hand isn't that much bigger than its wrist so I don't increase in that case.

Worsted weight yarn 4 size 4.5mm (US#7) Double point needles
15 st = 4 in.
Cast on 8 stitches on each of 3 DP needles. Join in a circle without twisting. :)
Knit 1 to 2 inches of ribbing.
Knit 2 rows of plain stockinette.
Knit 3 stitches on the next needle.
Place a marker.
Make 1 stitch.
Knit 2 stitches.
Make 1 stitch.
Place a marker.
Knit the remainder of the row and 1 more row plain.
*Knit the next row increasing after the first marker and before the second one.
Knit the next row plain.
repeat * until there are 8 stitches between the markers.
When you knit the next round place the 8 stitches from between the markers on stitch holder, remove the markers, and cast on 2 stitches where the 8 were.
Knit plain until the mitten measures 2 1/4 inches from the cuff. (probably 2 rows)
Shape the end by knitting 2 stitches and then knitting 2 stitches together around the row.
Knit one row plain.
Knit 1 stitch, knit 2 together around.
Knit one row plain.
Knit 2 together around.
Knit one row plain with 2 stitches on each needle.
Break the yarn, thread a needle, run the yarn through all 6 stitches, pull the DP needles out, draw it tight, and tie it off. Weave in the end.

Now back to the thumb.
Pick up 4 stitches where you cast on 2.
Place the 8 stitches on the holder 4 on a needle.
Knit around.
Knit 2, knit 2 together around.
Knit around.
Knit 1, knit 2 together around.
Knit around.
Knit 2 together around.
Break the yarn and tie the thumb off like you did the hand of the mitten.
Repeat that for the next mitten.

Voila, tiny mittens in about four hours.
