The Australian
Breastfeeding Association (ABA) is a voluntary organisation established
in 1964 to encourage and support mothers who wish to promote skilled and
loving mothering, while creating in the community an awareness of the
importance of human milk.
In
Queensland there are currently 58 groups, 220 trained voluntary
breastfeeding counsellors and 3,200 subscribers. 4,505 hours of
voluntary work is given to the mothers of Queensland every week by the
counsellors and community educators of Queensland groups.
At
present, there are nearly 290 ABA groups nationwide and almost 1,100
counsellors. In the past 34 years, over 140,000 Australians have become
subscribers to the Association.
Queensland
Branch set up its own administrative support centre in October 1992.
Today this office houses the Brisbane telephone Helpline, the branch
resource library*, possibly the largest lactation library in Queensland
and is the venue for regular counsellor meetings and Breastfeeding
Education Seminars. Office hours are 9.00 am to 2.00 pm, Monday to
Friday. Much of the Branch's administration work is carried out at this
venue. It provides a consistent central contact point for the Queensland
community.
*Non-subscribers
as well as subscribers are welcome to use the library for research on
lactation and related issues.
